The Sulzer Areal in 8400 Winterthur is a former industrial quarter in the city centre, originally developed from 1834 as the core production site of the Sulzer engineering and machinery group. It grew into a dense, roughly 20‑hectare factory ensemble between the main station, Zürcherstrasse, and the railway line, once comparable in size to Winterthur’s old town. After the decline of heavy industry from the late 1980s, the area has been transformed into a mixed‑use urban district with lofts, offices, creative studios, restaurants, a cinema, and parts of the ZHAW, while preserving many historic halls and industrial structures. Today it functions as a cultural and economic hub that blends industrial heritage with contemporary living, working, and leisure uses.
